Phil Smith, VP – Asset Management

Phil Smith is a demonstrated leader with nearly 30 years of experience in the energy industry in the areas of asset management, structured finance, treasury, financial accounting and analysis and business optimization. Phil has held numerous senior operational and financial positions including regional head of asset management –Latin America, divisional Controller (merchant power subsidiary) and CFO (energy merchant banking subsidiary) for a large multi-national diversified energy company (Duke Energy) which held over $60 billion in assets worldwide. He played a key leadership role as Duke merged and acquired several large energy related platforms transforming the company to a global vertically integrated diversified energy company. Since leaving Duke, Phil has offered his diverse set of skills to numerous private equity firms assisting with power plant asset management and optimization.

Most recently, as an independent consultant, Phil has assisted several large private equity firms with physical asset positions in the power sector through operational or due diligence support. Phil has focused a large portion of his time and effort on biomass power plant applications with an emphasis on project development, operations, fuel procurement and analysis and general acquisition due diligence. He has also gained significant experiences in the areas of construction management and merchant power operations in connection with a large combined cycle gas plant. Phil’s insight and involvement were instrumental in helping his clients attain their overall goals and objectives.

Phil has spent the majority of his career in management where he led various financial teams during periods of exponential growth with little or no turnover.

A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Phil graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and is a Certified Public Accountant.
